How to disable notification of joining contacts to Telegram

Telegram also alerts you automatically when one of your phone contacts joins the service. These notifications, usually in the form of "[Contact Name] has joined Telegram," come through as push notifications, add new messages to your chat list, and can be annoying if you have many contacts slowly joining the service.
The good news is that Telegram has a simple switch to turn off these notifications. This feature is available on Android, iOS, and computer platforms (as of February 2026). Turning off this feature will prevent push notifications and new chat messages from appearing for contacts who have joined, although Telegram may still sync your contacts in the background if you have this feature enabled.
Note: This will not prevent your contacts from receiving notifications if you join or become active yourself.
Step-by-Step: Turn Off Contact Joined Notifications on Mobile (Android & iOS)
-
Launch the Telegram app on your mobile device.
-
Access Settings:
- For Android: Click the hamburger menu icon ☰ in the top-left corner, then choose Settings.
- For iOS: Click Settings at the bottom-right corner.
-
Click Notifications and Sounds.
-
Scroll down to the Events area (on Android) or search for New Contacts (on iOS and some Android versions).
-
Locate the setting named Contact joined Telegram (or New Contacts on some versions) and turn it off.
-
This setting will be turned off immediately without requiring a restart of the Telegram app.
On Desktop (Windows/Mac/Web)
-
Open Telegram Desktop or Web.
-
Click the hamburger menu (three lines) in the top-left corner → Settings.
-
Click Notifications.
-
Scroll down to the Other or Events section.
-
Deselect Contact joined Telegram.
Additional Tips
- If you're still getting notifications occasionally after turning them off, make sure your app is updated to the latest version (check App Store/Google Play or Telegram's auto-update).
- To stop contact syncing in its tracks (which might prevent Telegram from notifying you of new joins), go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Contacts and turn off Sync Contacts (though this might impact other functionality, such as friend suggestions).
- These notifications are distinct from overall push notification settings; turning them off won't impact message, call, or group notifications.
- If the exact wording is slightly different (for example, depending on app version or language), search for anything with "contacts," "joined," or "new contacts" in Notifications.
This is a simple fix to keep your Telegram experience more streamlined and uninterrupted—particularly helpful if you're concerned about privacy or have a large contact list.
